Eliot Bridge Construction

The Mass. Department of Transportation (MassDOT) began the Eliot Bridge Preservation project in the fall of 2024 with the schedule to complete construction in the arches by October. Due to unforeseen repairs needed, the schedule has been impacted so that work will not be completed before HOCR. Due to this, the Cambridge Arch of the Eliot Bridge will be closed throughout September and during Head Of The Charles Regatta.

While we normally only see a small number of crews take the Cambridge arch of Eliot during racing as it is not the preferred line – coaches, coxswains, and rowers should be aware that the arch is completely closed to all traffic. Our course team will make sure this arch is well marked so it is clear that it is unavailable for travel during racing.

Before HOCR week: Teams coming to practice on the Charles ahead of HOCR week should also be aware that there is a staging bulkhead on the shoreline heading downstream, and should note the traffic pattern below crews should row low pressure through this area and crews traveling upstream should be staying as wide as possible. This bulkhead will be removed during HOCR week and will not be present from Wednesday 10/15 – Monday 10/20
